Dear Colleagues, The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles announces online access to digitized reproductions of the stock books from Goupil & Cie./ Boussod, Valadon & Co. This valuable resource is available online from the Getty’s Digital Library Collections at http://www.getty.edu/research/conducting_research/digitized_collections/goupil_cie/index.html Goupil & Cie. was a central force on the French art market of the nineteenth century. Founded in 1827, the Parisian gallery soon established branches in London, Berlin, Brussels, New York, and The Hague. Intended to provide a broad network for the distribution of reproductive prints, Goupil & Cie. carried the work of academic artists, major painters of the Romantic generation, and all the principal figures of the Barbizon School. Besides some Impressionist paintings, the gallery also pursued minor trade in Old Masters. Among the clients were the American Vanderbilts and the Havemeyers. The Goupil stock books are part of the Inventory of the Dieterle family records of French art galleries, 1846-1986 (accession number 900239). The Goupil & Cie./ Boussod, Valadon & Co. stock books are the first substantial materials to be digitized from the Research Library’s significant collections supporting provenance and art market research. Online access to all pages of the fifteen Goupil & Cie./ Boussod, Valadon & Co. stock books held in Special Collections of the Getty Research Institute is the first step in a larger digital project. The contents of the stock books have been transcribed and indexed according to the various details of the transactions recorded in the books. By February 2009 the indexes to the first 7½ books will be searchable online, through a database produced by the Project for the Study of Collecting and Provenance (PSCP). The remainder will be searchable and linked to the digital images by June 2009.
