World Library and Information Congress: 75th IFLA General Conference and Assembly "Libraries create futures: Building on cultural heritage" 23-27 August 2009, Milan, Italy ------- Call for Papers Art Libraries Section Theme: Art Libraries and Cultural Heritage: Select, collect and connect. IFLA's Art Libraries Section invites you to submit a paper proposals for a presentation on this theme for its 2-hour Open Session at the 75th World Library and Information Congress in Milan or at the Pre-Conference in Florence 19-20 August. OPEN SESSION, MILAN, August 23 - 27, 2009 In conjunction with the IFLA theme the Art Libraries Section proposes a two-part program under the title, “Art Libraries and Cultural Heritage: select, collect and connect. The sessions will address the art library’s role and influence in selecting, gathering and disseminating cultural heritage. The Section welcomes proposals that address this theme in terms of technology, preservation, history, collection development, cataloging, display, outreach and other relevant areas of interest. The aspects of the general topic could be: - The heritage of art libraries: origin, development and direction. - Case studies of private art libraries and collectors transferring their libraries into the public domain. - New approaches to the original through technology. - Fashioning Collections: The collector as selector. - Do art libraries today reflect personal or cultural bias or taste from the past? - Preservation and conservation: of the libraries, the collections and the heritage they represent. - Is the notion of rareness and value reserved only for printed and manuscript items? - What about files that are "born digital?" - Text and Image: Developments in representing art library collections (cataloging, image databases, exhibition practices, outreach, publications, etc.) - Simultaneous access to resources from libraries, museums and archives. - New forms of access and analysis of cultural heritage materials. PRE-CONFERENCE, FLORENCE, 19-20 August 2009 For more interactive discussion of the practical issues related to the for-mentioned theme, the Art Libraries Section is pleased to announce its intention to hold a Pre-Conference in Florence, which should be more focused on the role of the art libraries for research and preservation of cultural heritage. The pre-conference will be held in four different institutional locations will have the time and the occasion to present its holdings, activities and projects. Afterwards time will be dedicated to presentations, conferences and discussions which should refer to a predefined general thematic line. The institutions and themes: 1. Library of the Uffizi Gallery: “Art libraries and (museum) collections” 2. Kunsthistorisches Institut: “Research libraries and art history” 3. Villa I Tatti: “libraries and interdisciplinary research” 4. Biblioteca Marucelliana (in cooperation with Riccardiana and Laurenziana): “Libraries with historical holdings: local history and cultural heritage” Submission guidelines The proposals must be submitted in an electronic format and must contain: ● Title of paper. ● Authors of the paper. ● Abstract or summary of the paper (200-400 maximum words). ● Speaker's info: name, address, professional affiliation, email address, biographical note (40 words). Important Dates January 30th 2008: Deadline for submission of proposals and abstracts. March 1st 2008: Notification of acceptance by the Review Committee of the Section. May 1st 2008: Deadline for submission of full text of the paper.
