Hi Jean, This is great news. I think that issues like this are the next conversation in image archives. Perhaps the Society of Architectural Historians SAH ARA (http://www.sah.org/index.php?src=gendocs&ref=AVRN%20Press%20Release&category=AVRN) that debuts this Spring will be able to help. A good model for us has been collaboration between institutions that have the digitized images but no funding to proceed and institutions that have funded the metadata specialists and can move to complete the project. In this economic climate, the collaborative model is looking good. We will point to the Rensselaer site on our guides now and hope to talk more offlist. In 1996, we digitized about 1000 of the original color images from the Armenian Archives set and posted them on our website (http://www.lib.rpi.edu/dept/library/html/ArmArch/ and these images can be accessed without restriction. Within the past 2 years we have digitized more of these original color slides, where were admittedly in a deteriorating condition, and have added them to the Rensselaer Digital Collections (http://library.rpi.edu/setup.do )and these are also publicly accessible. We did not post the full quality images on the website but if anyone wants a large scale image, I am happy to supply it. I still retain all the original B&W images on film for the entire set of microforms, which could eventually be scanned and digitized, if we had both the time and the money to commit to such a project. What I foresee happening is that this will be accomplished piecemeal, by student workers, over a very extended period. It is my hope, since this project was my first when I arrived at Rensselaer in 1980, that I could accomplish this before I retire in 6 short years! Jeanne Jeanne M. Now my request for information. I am concerned about the number of image sets that we all have in microform and I can find no evidence of any efforts to turn into digital archives. I am looking at examples like the IDC Armenian Architecture set from Rensselaer Polytechnic, the Conway Library Archive from the Courtauld, or the Italian Roman Architecture Archive and many more particularly architectural sets. Does anyone know of plans to digitize and market any of these archives or offer them freely? Is ARTstor looking at any of these collections? I don't think of these as falling under orphan works. Have we had any discussion about whether or not the images can be converted to digital and offered by institutional collections hosted on ARTstor? There is some very good stuff here.
