ARLIS/NA 2008-2009 Internship Award Recipient Selected

The Art Libraries Society of North America is pleased to announce Adrienne Lai as the recipient of its 2008-2009 Internship Award.  This prestigious award grants $2,500 to support a period of internship for a student preparing for a career in art librarianship or visual resources curatorship. In addition to the $2,500 stipend, Ms. Lai will receive a one-year complimentary membership in ARLIS/NA.

Adrienne Lai is presently a candidate for Joint Master of Archival Studies and Library and Information Studies graduate degrees at the University of British Columbia. She holds a BFA from the Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design in Vancouver, B.C., and an MFA from the University of California, Irvine. She currently serves as events coordinator and communications director for the Special Library Association’s student chapter at the University of British Columbia.

Ms. Lai is on a career trajectory for employment in an academic art library or visual resources collection where she can focus on reference services, creative approaches to instruction, and liaison and outreach work. Her background as a studio artist, art critic, curator, and educator is excellent preparation for such a career. She also plans to continue her investigations into research methods related to the visual arts disciplines and hopes to disseminate her findings through presentations and publications.

As has been the case in recent years, the Subcommittee read many stellar applications and is pleased to note that twenty-two different graduate programs from Canada and the United States were represented. While only one ARLIS/NA Internship Award is granted each year, ARLIS/NA does maintain a list of paid and unpaid internship opportunities; interested students and potential hosts are encouraged to visit the Internship Roster website (http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/afa/pdc/internshiproster.htm).

Congratulations to Adrienne Lai and many thanks to all the applicants who took the time to prepare an application!
