Jeffrey-

Below are some print sources that are a good source of biographies of
American photographers:

These two encyclopedias include biographies of photographers and essays
on more general topics. The nineteenth century set includes
photographers who worked at the end of the nineteenth century and into
the twentieth century:

Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography, Hannavy, John, (ed).
New York,

                 London: Routledge, 2008. 2 vols.

Encyclopedia of Twentieth-Century Photography, Warren, Lynn, (ed.) New
York, NY:

                  Taylor & Francis Group, 2006. 3 vols.

This title is from the early 80s but it is a good source of
biographies.

Browne, Turner and Elaine Partnow. Macmillan Biographical Encyclopedia
of

Photographic Artists & Innovators. New York: MacMillan
Publishing Company, 1982.

These two volumes are an excellent source of information about early
American photographers in different geographical locations of the
American west.

Palmquist, Peter and Thomas R. Kailbourn. Pioneer Photographers from the
Mississippi

to the Continental Divide: a biographical dictionary,
1839-1865. Stanford,

                Calif.: Stanford University Press, 2005.

Palmquist, Peter and Thomas R. Kailbourn. Pioneer Photographers of the
Far West: A

                Biographical Dictionary, 1840-1865. Stanford, Calif.,
2000.

Finally, the last two sources aren't really reference sources, but they
are a good text to search in for biographical information. These two
books were published about the Hallmark Photographic Collection, which
our museum now owns. These books do provide much information about the
photographers included, and they also include an extensive bibliography:

Davis, Keith. An American Century of Photography: From Dry-Plate to
Digital: The

Hallmark Photographic Collection. New York: Hallmark
Cards in Association

                 with Harry N. Abrams, 1999.

Davis, Keith F. and Jane L. Aspinwall. The Origins of American
Photography: from Daguerreotype to Dry-Plate: The Hallmark Photographic
Collection at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Kansas City, MO: Hall
Family Foundation, in association with The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art,
2007.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Hello,

Does anyone know of a good reference source (print or online) for bios
of American photographers, especially 19th and early 20th century
photographers? Or even better, photographers who specialized in
shooting theatrical subjects? I am doing authority work in the Folger's
photo collection and am finding that we don't have a good body of print
resources pertaining to these areas, so if anyone can recommend
something we could buy, it would be much appreciated. I am aware of the
Craig's Daguerreian Registry website and the Broadway Photographs site
compiled by David S. Shields.

Thanks,

Bettina
