Princeton University's graphic arts collection holds Lucas Fielding's The
Art of Colouring and Painting  Landscapes in Water Colours...Baltimore, 1815;
and a number of other early American manuals and sample books. We also have an
extensive collection of original dealer's catalogues, both European and
American. The Grolier Club's exhibition "Teaching American to Draw" 2006, covered
the topic very well and most of the materials in this show from private
collections are also held at Princeton.
If the student wants to go back further than 1800, we have exceptional
material in color samples, such as the 1794 Wiener Farbenkabinet oder
vollständiges Musterbuch aller Natur-, Grund-, und Zusammensetzungfarben, “Viennese Color
Collection or Complete Book of Samples of all Natural, Basic, and Combined
Colors.” see the posting at
http://blogs.princeton.edu/rarebooks/2008/04/recently_acquired_wiener_farbe.html
Although the collection does not travel, all researchers are welcome and
grants are available for visiting scholars.

Subj: [ARLIS-L] Question about artists' pigments

Hello ARLIS,

I'm trying to help a graduate student find collections of art instruction
manuals, conservation manuals, and pigment compendiums published in the United
States from 1800-1950. He is also searching for a list of American industrial
trade companies that made artists' pigments during this period.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Kasia
