Job Summary

The Systems Librarian is responsible for the effective operation, use, and
continued development of the Library’s information systems, networks and
services, coordinating, administering, and evaluating all of the Library’s
IT needs.  The incumbent advises on, manages and supports the
implementation, operation, integration, and enhancement of these systems.
The System Librarian is charged with providing instruction and technical
support to Library staff and Readers, liaising with system vendors, and
monitoring, evaluating and recommending new technology applications and
software which will improve library and knowledge services.

 

Key responsibility areas

 

Management

• Plan, evaluate, implement and manage the Library’s automated systems

• Configure and manage the systems in response to specific needs of Library
and Collections users

 

Support

• Provide technical support for new projects related to information systems

• Provide technical support for database problems in collaboration with
Information Technology services

• Offer first-line support for problems related to the integrated Library
system

• Train Collections users

• Create, modify and supervise the use of scripts which standardize data in
accordance with library science and collections norms

• Create reports based on software data

• Analyse the Library’s requirements for new internal databases and make
proposals

• Suggest changes to staff work flow in order to take advantage of new
functionalities provided by software

 

Update

• Update software on Library workstations

• Supervise the update of bibliographic data for uncatalogued Library
materials

• Effect  global changes on Library and Collections data

• Install, configure and test new versions of Collections software

 

Liaison

• Act as liaison between the Library/Collections and Information Technology
services on the subject of technologies used in the Library/Collections and
vice-versa

• Act as liaison between the Library/Collections and the software
producers/service providers to supervise and ensure proper implementation

 

Required qualifications

• Education level: Masters degree in library science or information
technology from an accredited school of library and information science

• Number of years of relevant work experience required: 3 to 5 years
experience in library services and database management

• Solid command of English and French, both written and oral

• Sound knowledge of automated systems currently in use in libraries

• Knowledge of SQL and Crystal Reports

• Familiarity with library activities, notably catalogue research and
database updates

• Knowledge of electronic data exchange formats such as EDIFACT

• Knowledge of art and architecture is an advantage
