Hello collective wisdom! Our exhibit team is planning an Abraham Lincoln show next year and my boss asked me to track down a wood engraving (block, plate?) of a Civil War scene from Harper's (preferably an image of A. L.) that we can borrow. I've determined that Harpers is owned by Hearst Corporation, so his suggestion about finding a Harper's archive is tricky. I've looked at thier webpage and googled and done literature searches. I have a call in to the curator at the Farnsworth Museum in Maine b/c it's the only thing I came up with so far. However, ideally the collection would be in Chicago so we can avoid certain costs. I haven't been able to find an image of a Harper's wood engraving plate, so if you come across one on the web please send me thi link! Another artifact I’m looking for is a camera used to take carte-de-visite photographs, and apparently there are a few kinds, including a multiplying camera and a four-lens camera. I put calls in to the Museum of Science and Industry and Chicago History Museum registrars and a curator at the Eastman house. I think this one will be less problematic. Thanks a million in advance!!
