Just a note, the American Association of Museums, along with many other professional societies, use the Smithsonian Institution Archives to preserve and house important association records. They do not charge, and even shipping/transfer of records to the SIA is free for the association.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] ARLIS Archives
"The ARLIS/NA archives are now in good hands at the University of Illinois, but there will be significant costs involved in processing this material over the next three years."
I was very happy to hear a few months ago that the ARLIS archives would be deposited at the U. of Illinois. However, I don't remember hearing that ARLIS would have to pay for their processing. Could someone explain more of the details (and the costs) of the arrangement? Since presumably files will be deposited at the U. of I. on a regular basis, does this mean that the costs will be ongoing? I have some experience in processing archives and I don't recall ever hearing that a host institution charged processing fees. In this time of shrinking budgets, is this a new wrinkle for some archives collections?
