The artist collective General Idea did a number of works about AIDS in the 1980s and 90s. There's a catalogue for an exhibition from about 5 years ago:

Additionally, Sue Coe produced prints depicting people ill in hospital beds. I have seen these prints exhibited at the Yale University Medical Library but I am not sure if they are reproduced in any books by or about her. The Medical History Library here has a prints and drawings department with an amazing collection that would likely be useful for this student: http://www.med.yale.edu/library/historical/.
