Hello colleagues-

I'd rather being swimming in a pond..or eating an ice cream cone while strolling across Harvard Yard (wait-I just did that....)but instead I am writing to you all to alert you all to a searching problem we have unearthed on the Avery on CSA platform, and to see if any of you have already experienced this and/or contacted CSA. It involves searching names with diacritics-the most useful example being Fritz Höger. A search of the subject/artist field for this name, without any diacritics, brings back 0 records. A search of his project "chilehaus" brings back records, and clicking on the subject heading for the artist results in the 28 records on this artist. A "browse index" search also does not result in locating this artist. If you cut and paste the name with diacritics you will get to records...but I just tried copying from another webpage with diacritics and got nothing! I don't know about you all, but I can't think of a single other database that requires that users enter the diacritics to get search results!

I have alerted CSA, and did check with Ted Goodman to see if he knew whether this was a problem across platform. It seems to be limited to CSA. I did write to CSA before about what I realize was a similar problem with an author search (Hélène Lipstadt). Still no response from CSA in terms of how and when they plan to address this problem.

I have tried this search in BHA on CSA with no problems-I get search results without having to put in the diacritics. So it seems a special problem related to the Avery index.

I am loath to consider a change of interface...but I think this is a serious flaw that needs to be addressed promptly..and maybe some more grumbling from the library community might motivate them to address this issue.

I'd welcome any comments/summary of experiences, and would be happy to summarize to the list. I remember seeing some messages summarizing some of the issues using Avery on the different platforms, and this might be a useful addition, if this list is still being compiled.

On a related note I have been unable to resurrect either an Architecture section listserv or the AASL listserv. Anyone know what's up with those?

Cheers....

Sarah
