Hi, Liz - all the way from sunny Maine. How the heck are you? Please
pass this along to Jennifer.

Hi, Jennifer:
The Maine College of Art library reclassified almost its entire collection
(around 28,000 volumes) last summer. Some time ago (at least 3 years) we
stopped using Dewey and began using LC - just like Sherman said. But we
reached a point where space and student confusion made it essential to
convert everything. We also did it to be compatible with other colleges
and universities.

We did much of the conversion in a blitz - we closed to the public and all
users for 5 weeks and we took everything off the shelves, reclassified
them, relabelled them and then put them back on the shelves. Because of
the intricacies of LC, they didn't go back on the same shelves they came
from, so that's why we did it this way. We also did a trial-and-error
estimation of where materials would go back on the shelves - which was off
quite a bit a number of times!! - so we ended up doing a lot of shifting
once the shelves began filling up.

We think it was worth it. We certainly got to know the collection! And
we were able to clear up some very odd, very old cataloging errors.
Although we didn't finish in that 5-week period, we got about 80% of it
done and then worked the rest of the summer to finish off another 15%.
The rest we completed in the fall term.

It's a lot of work, and I agree with Sherman that if you don't have to do
it (i.e., the collection doesn't circulate, etc.), then perhaps you
shouldn't. My recommendation if you do decide to go forward is to close
down for as long as you can possibly do so. We had been classifying new
books in LC, picking at doing conversion for months (any time a book was
checked in we'd reclassify it) and getting nowhere fast, so we just bit
the bullet, so to speak, and just

Best,
Moira
