All,

Any suggestions for Irene beyond the two sources I mentioned in the thread below?

That would be great.  Thanks.  (These aren’t costumes though.  They are art pieces in the form of coats).

Hi Irene,

Hmm. Well, I can’t recommend specific institutions, but costume museums would definitely be a good fit. Depending on her subjects others might too. To find costume museums in North America, use The Official museum directory (OCLC number 1264511) published by the AAM. (If you ILL it, be sure to get both volumes; it’s worth owning, though). Outside of N. America, and for galleries, use the International Directory of Arts (OCLC number 173878654 or 228427390).

Would it be okay for me to post your query to ARLIS-L? There are many art librarians there who might be able to recommend specific institutions.

Best,

Subject: Question

Hi Marc,

I have a faculty member here who is a few years away from having a fabulous group of artistic tribute coats that they are making.  I have seen a finished piece, a tribute to Maya Angelou that blew me away.  She’s currently working on a piece for Rachel Carson, where she’s creating felt for the fabric incorporating symbols with meaning attached to Carson.

Not only are they lovely, but powerful pieces of art.  She’s a faculty member in Theatre here and mostly designs costumes.  This is her first foray into pieces as art (not part of the production).  I wondered if you knew of galleries/museums that might be interested in exhibiting this kind of work – or could direct me to a resource for this information?

Thank you,

Irene
