The Fales Library & Special Collections at
The Fales Library & Special collections is the
primary repository for literary and contemporary art special collections in the
NYU Libraries. The collections comprise more than 200,000 printed volumes, over
12,000 linear feet of manuscript and archival collections, and a variety of
other special formats including over 15,000 moving image and audio materials.
Strengths of the collection include: the Fales Collection of English and
American Literature, approximately 150,000 volumes documenting the development
of the English and American novel from 1700-present; the Downtown New York
Collection, which holds over 10,000 linear feet of materials that document the
Downtown New York literary and contemporary arts scene from 1974 to the present
and is a major resource for contemporary art and culture studies; the Food
Studies Collection, which holds more than 20,000 printed items and a growing
collection of archival materials; and the papers of various authors and
artists, such as Erich Maria Remarque, E. L. Doctorow, James Beard, David
Wojnarowicz, Lynne Tillman, Martha Wilson, Richard Foreman, and Dennis Cooper
and the organizational archives of Creative Time, Mabou Mines, the AIR Gallery,

Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the general direction of the Head of the Fales
Library, the Senior Archivist will oversee the collection management of the
Fales Library’s manuscript and archival collections, setting policies,
and assuring that archival processing meets nationally accepted standards.
Duties will include training and supervising processing attendants (4.0 FTE),
monitoring the workflow of materials, and the creation of EAD, RLIN, and other
electronic and print finding aids for special collections materials. The Senior
Archivist will manage digital collections and play a role in the long term
preservation of archival born digital materials. As part of collection
management responsibilities the Senior Archivist will coordinate the exhibition
loan of archival materials. Working in conjunction with the director, the
curator of books, and the media specialist and processing archivist, the Senior
Archivist will assist with collection development, especially of archival
materials and artist’s materials, provide in-depth reference services,
and represent the Fales Library in a variety of library, university, and
professional venues, including bibliographic instruction with special
collections materials. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required: Graduate degree in library/information
science or an accredited archives program; professional experience in archives
and manuscripts management; excellent written and oral communication and
interpersonal skills; Proficiency with EAD mark-up of finding aids; expertise
with digital preservation and access techniques and
issues.
Five-years of successful collection management
experience in an academic/ research special collections or archive; proven
supervisory skills; advanced subject degree in a field related to the
collections strengths, such as contemporary art and postmodern art practices,
or area studies such as American Studies, Performance Studies, Gender Studies;
Preferred: Knowledge of one or more western European
languages. Other preferred qualifications include: experience with donors;
familiarity with the Archivists’ Toolkit; knowledge of standards for
digital imaging, and sound and moving image preservation issues; experience maintaining
digital assets and metadata; knowledge of museum registrar practices and
experience coordinating exhibition loans.
