      Since it doesn’t look as though anyone more qualified has replied, and since it may be a while before I make it over to the University of Washington, take a look at Journal of aesthetics and art criticism 31:2 (Winter 1972):  215-226.  We don’t take that journal, but my guess is that this article will direct you to the passage you’re looking for.  (I may well be wrong, but it seems worth a try.)

I received the following question from a faculty member and I'm hoping you can help me with the answer:

 

 "I am doing a book on verbal-visual communication and am trying to locate an essay or chapter Susanne K. Langer wrote on icons in painting and other art.  It gave her definition of icon.  Could you give me bibliographic information about such a piece?"

I've searched databases and the few Langer books we have in the art library.  I'm hoping someone in the Collective Wisdom knows the reference and can help.
