Dear Stan,

Victorian engravings refer to wood engravings which are created and printed in a similar manner as woodcuts, however using finer tools and much harder wood. The great advantage of wood engravings for books and periodicals was their printing method: they were inked and printed in a relief fashion at the same time as the accompanying type was printed. If you are looking for a great book that explains all methods of artistic and reproductive printing take a look at Bamber Gasgoigne's "How to Identify Prints".

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Victorian engravings

Dear Colleagues:
I have a question about those popular Victorian engravings--the kind you find in ;the Trader Joe's Catalogues. Are they steel engravings, or woodcuts?
Stan
