For National Library Week and Archives Week/Month, I often host a library open house with a behind the scenes tour of our special collection storage areas.

We advertise in our museum newsletter and through e-blasts/invitations to museum members, library users, professional colleagues and other libraries and archives.  Sometimes I have mailed flyers to library users, other libraries, and colleagues.  I typically have the event on Thursday evenings from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.  We usually get about 20 people.  We do two tours lasting about 30 minutes each.  People can also browse the library on their own.   I serve wine, cheese, and other refreshments.  We have two small exhibition cases.  The people who come enjoy it and sometimes come back as patrons, volunteers, or interns.  That' about it.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] open houses in the library

As more and more information is delivered to our patrons' desktops, the number of people coming into many libraries is declining.  If you've welcomed students and faculty into the library by means of an open house to show them what the library still has to offer, I'd be very interested in the details.  For instance,
How did you advertise it?
What time of day did you have it?
How long did it last?
Was it successful?
Would you do it again?  Any differently?

Thanks.
