Dear Colleagues,
I would be interested in hearing from any library that owns a copy of
the 1999 Taschen volume on Helmut Newton, edited by June Newton. I
would like to know how and where the volume is stored/shelved in your
library, how it is used, what its current condition is, whether it has
been repaired or rebound, etc.

We have owned a copy since early 2000 and had it on its Philip
Stark-designed stand (with a modified support), available for public
perusal for five years, at the request of the donor. The weight of the
pages pulling down on the spine because of the slight angle of the
original stand and the weight of the immensely heavy covers caused
considerable damage to the binding.

In 2005, it was decided to protect the book by storing it flat on a
cart that can be rolled out on request. This is not a completely
satisfactory solution for a variety of reasons, but now the request has
been made to repair the volume. Any suggestion on how to proceed with a
volume of this size (66 pounds and 20 x 28 inches)? I am not sure that
our regular commercial binder would be able to handle this, although I
have not contacted them.

Any experience you may have or suggestions would be most welcome.
