Submitted by Deirdre Lawrence for the Brooklyn Museum's Asian Art Department:

Dear Colleagues,

The Brooklyn Museum is pleased to announce a new catalogue of the Museum's important holdings of Korean art, published by the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (NRICH), Korea. The catalogue is not available through the usual vendors.  Because of a restriction imposed by the Korean government, the Brooklyn Museum is solely responsible for its distribution in the U.S.. The Brooklyn Museum was one of the first American institutions to collect Korean art, beginning with an expedition to Korea in 1914.  It was also one of the first Western institutions to establish a permanent gallery for the display of Korean art.  As a result of the Museum's long-time commitment to the arts of Korea, its collection has grown to include significant holdings of ceramics from every major period, metalwork, paintings, home furnishings from various levels of Korean society, and costumes.  Highlights of the collection include a twelfth-century inlaid celadon ewer in the shape of a lotus flower and a fourteenth-century hanging scroll depicting the descent of the Buddha Amitabha.

The 325-page catalogue describes and illustrates more than 350 objects, with more than 150 illustrated in color.  It is fully bilingual, in English and Korean, with introductory essays by Amy G. Poster and Lyu Ma-ri.  It is Volume 14 in the series "Reports and catalogues of survey results on Korean artifacts housed in foreign institutions," an on-going project sponsored by the Korean government to document and assess overseas holdings of Korean art.

The catalogue is not available for sale, but it can be ordered from the Brooklyn Museum for a shipping and handling charge of $15.00 per copy (US$30.00 for overseas orders).   See below for order form.  For further information about the catalogue or the ordering process, please contact the Museum's Asian Art collections office:
