Terri,
Looks good, but you should know, as should everyone, that Janson
is not the author of the 7th edition of “Janson.” It
misrepresents itself, and would be a HUGE mistake, in my opinion, to include
it. In my original posting I referenced my review article of it. I
strongly suggest you read that article before you decide to include the Janson.
I see that my reference has been removed from your summary email,
so I’m reinstating it:
Jeffrey Weidman, “Many Are Culled But Few Are Chosen:
Janson’s History of Art, Its Reception, Emulators, Legacy, and
Current Demise, Journal of Scholarly Publishing, Volume 38, Number 2,
January 2007, pp. 85-107.
If MSU lacks this journal, you can easily get the article via
ILL.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] top 5 art/art history book recommendations - the list
Some
of you asked that I compile a list of all responses for my original query (see
below) and publish the complete list. Thankfully, my institution has the
online version of the Grove Dictionary of Art, a resource many of you
mentioned. With all these wonderful suggestions, I have to think a bit
more about the 5 that would best meet the needs of both MSU students going
abroad and native Dubai and regional students attending the MSU program.
Thanks
again for all of your recommendations!
-Author: Janson, H. W. (Horst Woldemar), 1913-1982

-a selection from the "second tier"
of survey textbooks, as well as Gardner's-- maybe
including Hartt's Italian Renaissance Trachtenberg's architecture survey
Sherman Lee's History of Far Eastern Art ?? the modern/contemporary art survey
-Title:
30,000 years of art : the story of human creativity across
time and space.
Publisher:
London ; New York : Phaidon, 2007.
-1)Gombrich’s
Story of Art. Also, 2) Julian Bell’s Mirror of the World:
A New History of Art (Thames & Hudson, 2007) is a superb World history
of art, and has received excellent reviews, most recently in TLS, I
believe.
Then,
3) Benedetti, Joan M. (Editor), et al. Art Museum Libraries and
Librarianship (Scarecrow and ARLIS/NA, 2007).
Then,
4) Marmor, Max, Alex Ross, et al. Guide to the Literature of Art
History 2 (Chicago: American Library Association, 2005).
As
for the fifth title, I’m suggesting a just-published survey that I have
not read or used extensively yet, but which I know has been eagerly anticipated
and which is already being used as a textbook. I am offering it as a
fifth possibility, as MSU is an American university:
Miller,
Angela L., Janet C. Berlo, Bryan J. Wolf, and Jennifer L. Roberts, with
Contributions by Margaretta M. Lovell and David Lubin. American
Encounters: Art, History, and Cultural Identity (Upper Saddle
River: Pearson Prentice Hall, 2008.

Title: Art in theory, 1900-2000 : an anthology of changing ideas / edited by
Charles Harrison and Paul Wood.
Edition: 2nd ed.
Imprint: Malden, MA : Blackwell Pub., 2003.
Physical Description: xxvii, 1258 p. ; 26 cm.

For the last two, any of the Phaidon Art & Ideas or Oxford History of Art
series.
-Fleming's Arts
& Ideas
-one
general survey, then four other books on regional art and architecture, to help
the students appreciate local culture
-the Time Saver Standards series
-I'd
suggest Phaidon Design Classics. London and NY: Phaidon, 2006.
-the latest ed. of Sir Banister Fletcher’s a history of
architecture as well as the Phaidon atlas of contemporary world
architecture. And with the packaging design degree in mind, maybe some
kind of design yearbook such as the Red Dot Design Yearbook?
My institution is establishing a campus in
Dubai. There will be a
> library presence, including a small print
collection. Bibliographers
> have been asked to supply titles of 5 books
that would best represent
> their disciplines. Here are the criteria:
>
>
>
> 1)Current imprints only
>
> 2)English language
>
> 3)Appeals to "a very general population of
university students who
> have general studies needs"
>
>
>
> These can be reference books, but they must fit
the criteria and we
> must not have them online. My first
thought was something along the
> lines of the current Gardner's Art Through the
Ages or another survey
> book, but beyond that my mind goes blank.
I would welcome your
> suggestions. The only programs in Dubai
that might possibly have a
> connection to art/art history are packaging
design and construction
> management. There are no art/art history
courses planned at present, just general "humanities"
> type classes.
