What would a trip to Denver be without a view of the sun setting over the Rocky Mountains? Incomplete, to say the least. Please allow us to welcome you to the ARLIS/NA 2008 conference from the top floor of the Grand Hyatt, where live music, good food, and beautiful views of the mountains and the Mile High City await you.

ARLIS/NA at Altitude: A Big DAM Party!
Sunday, May 4 – 4:00-5:30 (“Icon or Enclosure?” Session); 6:30-9:30 (reception at the Denver Art Museum)
ARLIS/NA invites you to A Big DAM Party! at the Denver Art Museum. Designed by Daniel Libeskind (who is best known for his work on the Jewish Museum in Berlin and his design for the World Trade Center site in New York), the Frederic C. Hamilton extension of the museum opened in fall 2006, sparking controversy locally and drawing visitors from across the nation and around the world.
Your evening will begin at the hotel with a special session, “Icon or Enclosure? The Architecture of the Denver Art Museum.” Panelists will include Brit Probst, Principal of Davis Partnership Architects in Denver, the firm that handled all local details of the construction and design of the Hamilton building, Heather Nielsen, Master Teacher for Native Arts and Head of Community and Family Programs at the Denver Art Museum, and Alan Michelson, Head of the Architecture and Urban Planning Library at the University of Washington. The panelists will talk about the planning, design, and construction of the museum, the effects of the design on programming and education at the museum, and the architectural criticism of the museum over forty years.
Afterwards, we’ll give you a chance to don your finest museum-going/cocktail-drinking attire and then head over to the museum so you can see the building for yourself. Come mingle with your colleagues, enjoy decadent hors d’oeuvres and drinks, view the art, and listen to music provided by a world-class jazz trio.
The Frederic C. Hamilton building of the Denver Art Museum houses a world-class collection of modern and contemporary art, including works by Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Damien Hirst, Jenny Holzer, and many others. Also on view are works from the western American art collection, which features works by Albert Bierstadt, Charles Marion Russell, and Frederic Remington, as well as a large selection of contemporary artists' depictions of the western United States. ARLIS/NA members will be able to see the much-anticipated traveling exhibition "Inspiring Impressionism" during the reception as well.
