Hi all,
I'd second jeff's vote for the new Mirror of the World. And also for  a general survey, Stokstad's is pretty good, and one we are using now.

Dear Terri and ARLIs list,

I'd avoid Gardner and the so-called 7th edition of Janson.  If you want
my reasons against the "Janson," see my review essay, "Many Are Culled
But Few Are Chosen: Janson's History of Art, Its Reception, Emulators,
Legacy, and Current Demise," Journal of Scholarly Publishing, Volume 38,
Number 2, January 2007, pp. 85-107.

Because of the audience, I'd recommend 1)Gombrich's Story of Art.  Also,
2) Julian Bell's Mirror of the World: A New History of Art (Thames &
Hudson, 2007) is a superb World history of art, and has received
excellent reviews, most recently in TLS, I believe.

Then, 3) Benedetti, Joan M. (Editor), et al.  Art Museum Libraries and
Librarianship (Scarecrow and ARLIS/NA, 2007).

Then, 4) Marmor, Max, Alex Ross, et al.  Guide to the Literature of Art
History 2 (Chicago: American Library Association, 2005).

As for the fifth title, I'm suggesting a just-published survey that I
have not read or used extensively yet, but which I know has been eagerly
anticipated and which is already being used as a textbook.  I am
offering it as a fifth possibility, as MSU is an American university:

Miller, Angela L., Janet C. Berlo, Bryan J. Wolf, and Jennifer L.
Roberts, with Contributions by Margaretta M. Lovell and David Lubin.
American

Encounters: Art, History, and Cultural Identity (Upper
Saddle River: Pearson Prentice Hall, 2008.

Hope you find these suggestions useful,

Jeffrey
