Jeff and list-- It all depends on your point of view, but my reading of the TLS review of Julian Bell's book was that it was a very personal history of art, left out essential things, and reviewer recommended Honour and Fleming instead. A general Western history of art text would probably be a good bet; Gombrich seems an excellent recommendation too, since he's still used and much referred to.
