The Chicago Public Library has a rich collection of American art housed in the Harold Washington Library Center. Many of the works belong to the Library’s Civil War and American History Collection, including pieces by Lorado Taft and John Antrobus.  The collection also contains works installed for the building’s opening in 1991, as well as all the new branches contructed,  as part of the city’s “Percent-for-Art” program.

The Special Collections Department maintains a wonderful group of over 1,500 posters. The three subject collections with the most individual pieces are the railroad posters, which advertise train lines throughout the ; the World War I posters, primarily issued by United States and British governmental agencies; and the World War II posters, which are of American issue. This collection also includes 76 original pen and ink cartoons by Chicago Tribune editorial cartoonist John Tinney McCuitcheon (1870-1949).

Many of the 79 branches across the city maintain their own art collections, including works created during the WPA or donated by local artists or patrons.
The following links highlight some of our art collections.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] N.Y. times article about Bill Dane

Hello all,

There's a good article about Bill Dane, of the Newark Public Library,
in the New York Times for Tue. Dec. 18, Metro Section (i.e. Sec. B),
p.1,6.
The article "Keeper of an Unlikely Trove, Gutenberg to Warhol", by
Andrew
Jacobs,  is available on the paper's website for the next few days, and
directly
via the following permalink (which will continue to provide access, they
say, after
the article has passed into the NYT archives).
