Just to clarify, there are four current vendors of the old AMICO content: OCLC (CAMIO), Wilson, Luna Imaging, and ARTstor.  Each has a different interface, along with differences in the size and quality of the images and the downloads.  Trials are certainly warranted.  We find the content good for art history in general (minus the major pieces in world museums or in situ), better for 20th century (but not contemporary)  and best for studio areas such as photography, printmaking, ceramics, drawing, etc. as American museums are rich in those areas.

When you’re comparing, be sure to focus on the quality and ease of the image download and the “visuality” of the interface, i.e. how many thumbnails can it present at once (the more the better), can you sort your return easily by date or creator, and do the thumbnails come up with enough information to be usable (i.e. is only a short title displayed, but not a creator or culture to help identify them)

Eileen as usual is exactly right—it is the same collection (more or less) as Wilson’s “Art Museum Image Gallery” and I think LUNA Imaging offers another version of the former AMICO collection.  While it is all stuff from museum collections, there are some useful images (photography, prints and drawings) of an architectural nature in there.  Probably not enough to justify subscribing if you are primarily interested in architecture, but if you are subscribing for general art history, there are some nice things you will get as a bonus.  For instance I recently found a pre-Paris Commune photograph of the old Tuilleries Palace in Paris for a student in the Wilson AMIG version.  So you might want to get a free trial and play around with it.

The original AMICO content on which CAMIO and all the other current manifestations are based was limited to objects in American Museums. It is still object-oriented.  It’s not an architecture image base.

Hello All,

Has anyone had any experience with CAMIO, particularly with regard to architecture?

Thanks.
