our new blog <www.artstor.org/blog> to learn about ARTstor collection
news. However, we continue to hear from others who prefer to learn about
new collection information via his/her professional listserv. To keep
everyone informed of our latest collection information, we will continue
to send periodic updates to these lists. We apologize in advance for any
duplication in these posts. 


This announcement summarizes our collection development efforts over the
last few months and reflects our ongoing commitment to provide useful
content in support of our community's educational and scholarly
activities. This listing is divided into three segments:

New Collection Releases 

 

Community Murals from Timothy Drescher

This first release of images to the Community Murals Collection in the
ARTstor Digital Library includes over 1,800 images from Timothy
Drescher's photographic archive which contains examples of community
murals from across the United States.

Egyptian art from Arielle Kozloff Brodkey's personal archive
The Arielle Kozloff Brodkey archive consists of over 2,400 images
focused on the art, architecture and archaeology of ancient Egypt.

Images from the Mark Rothko Family Collection

This first release of images to the Mark Rothko Collection in the
ARTstor Digital Library includes 43 paintings scanned from eight-by-ten
color transparencies not previously in public collections.

"Eyes of the Nation" Collection 

The Library of Congress "Eyes of the Nation" collection includes over
5,000 images and provides a pictorial overview of American history and
includes prints, posters, maps, manuscript pages, photographs, design,
movie stills, and cartoons.

Two Archives from the Negative Collection at the Frick Art Reference
Library

We are pleased to announce the completion of an important collaboration
with the Frick Art Reference Library of two key archives. The first
archive, produced by the Italian photographic firm of Sansoni, richly
documents fresco cycles and other forms of architectural decoration
throughout Italy.  The second archive, from A.C. Cooper and related
archives, documents paintings as they passed through art auction
galleries in London in the 1920s and 1930s.

Paintings and Tapestries from the Getty

We are pleased to announce two new collections from the Getty.  The
first, J. Paul Getty Museum Collection, contains nearly 400 paintings
from the 14th century through the early 20th century.  The second
collection, Study Photographs of Tapestries in the Getty Research
Library, contains over 4,000 images from the Tapestries Collection.

Greek, Hellenistic and Roman sculptures from the Berlin State Museums

This first release of images from the Berlin State Museums includes 301
images of Greek, Hellenistic and Roman sculptures from the Collection of
Classical Antiquities.

Classical Antiquity Lantern Slides from Bryn Mawr College

The collection includes over 325 images -- examples of classical
architecture, architectural decoration, and sculpture - digitized from
lantern slides held at the Bryn Mawr College Visual Resources Center.

Historic Illustrations of Art and Architecture

This collection, created by Allan Kohl, contains over 300 images of
historic art and architecture illustrations originally published during
the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

New Collection Agreements - upcoming collections

 

Contemporary art exhibition installations from the New Museum

ARTstor and the New Museum of Contemporary Art are collaborating to
digitize and distribute approximately 7,000 images from the New Museum's
photo archive. This collaboration will significantly increase the
representation of contemporary art in the Digital Library.

Photographs of modern architecture (Ezra Stoller archive)

In collaboration with Esto Photographics, Inc., ARTstor is pleased to
announce the digitization of 70,000 images from the Ezra Stoller
archive. Ezra Stoller is widely recognized as the leading American
architectural photographer of the 20th century.

Images from the Yale University Art Gallery and the Peabody Museum of
Natural History

ARTstor is pleased to announce new agreements with the Yale Peabody
Museum of Natural History and the Yale University Art Gallery to make
over 30,000 images from their collections and photo archives available
through the Digital Library. These collections will bring together
materials currently housed separately at Yale institutions to develop a
digital collection devoted to African Art and Yale sponsored
archaeological expeditions.

Mexican retablos from Douglas Massey

ARTstor and Douglas Massey will collaborate to bring approximately 130
images of Mexican retablos to the Digital Library. Dating from 1912 to
1996, these small, colorful oil paintings represent modern expressions
of a traditional Mexican art form.

Images from the Library of Congress' Historic American Buildings Survey/
Historic American Engineering Record

Through a partnership with the Library of Congress, ARTstor will
distribute approximately 200,000 images from the Historic American
Buildings Survey (HABS) and Historic American Engineering Record (HAER)
image collections. Coverage spans across the United States and its
territories, representing various periods and styles from the 17th
through the 20th century.

Carnegie Survey of the South (Library of Congress)

ARTstor and the Library of Congress will collaborate to distribute
images from the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South
collection, a systematic record of early buildings and gardens in the
American South. The Library of Congress will be digitizing the Carnegie
Survey negatives for eventual distribution through the Digital Library.

Plans of ancient and medieval buildings and archaeological sites (Bryn
Mawr College)

Through a partnership with ARTstor, the Visual Resources Center at Bryn
Mawr College will be contributing a collection of site plans for key
ancient and medieval architectural monuments and archaeological sites.
There are approximately 8,000 black-and-white slides depicting
archaeological and building site plans, particularly relating to the
classical and ancient Near East, as well as medieval Europe.

Archaeological excavations from the Mellink Archive (Bryn Mawr College)

Through a partnership with ARTstor, approximately 4,000 images from the
Mellink Archive at Bryn Mawr College will be added to the Digital
Library. The images will depict archaeological sites in Turkey,
including numerous images of sites that Mellink excavated herself.

Art of East Asia from the Asian Art Photographic Distribution,
University of Michigan

ARTstor and the University of Michigan will digitize slides from the
archive associated with Asian Art Photographic Distribution, which
focuses on the art of East Asia.  Areas strongly represented in the
archive include Chinese painting, sculpture, bronzes and ceramics,
Central Asian Art, and Japanese painting.  Many of the objects
represented in the archive are richly documented with details.

Additions to Existing Collections

 

Images of contemporary art from the Larry Qualls Archive

An additional release of 5,000 images from the Larry Qualls Archive
brings the total number available to ARTstor users to approximately
11,500. Images from the Larry Qualls Archive document contemporary art
exhibitions at galleries and other exhibition spaces throughout New York
City and elsewhere.

European art and architecture from Scala Archives and Art Resource 

This release of additional images of major Italian and other European
works from Scala Archives, bringing the total number of Scala images now
available to ARTstor users to approximately 10,500.

Images from the Erich Lessing Culture and Fine Arts Archives

We have released approximately 1,200 additional images from the Erich
Lessing Culture and Fine Arts Archives.  These high quality images,
scanned from large format color transparencies, focus on key European
artists and collections from major European museums outside Italy.

Ghiberti collection completed 

The final 30 images of the Ghiberti collection depict the cleaned Noah
panel.  Along with the previously added images of the partially cleaned
panel, these images further underscore the importance of the recent
restoration campaign and its photographic documentation by ARTstor.

Islamic Art and Architecture collection

We have released approximately 2,300 additional images to the Islamic
Art and Architecture collection.  This latest release focuses on Ottoman
architecture in Turkey and brings the total number of images in this
collection to over 14,800.

New images of architecture available in the Hartill Archive of
Architecture and Allied Arts

Approximately 500 images have been added to the Hartill Archive of
Architecture & Allied Arts collection.  These additional images include
architecture in Spain (Barcelona and Valencia), Canada, Thailand, India,
and Peru, in addition to stained glass windows from cathedrals such as
Reims, Tours, Beauvais, and Bourges, among others.

Additional images of contemporary architecture from ART on FILE
ARTstor recently added over 300 images to the ART on FILE collection,
bringing the total collection to over 900 images. This most recent
addition focuses on contemporary architecture of Los Angeles and
Chicago.
