We were for many years the library for a local college level studio art school.  The librarian who was here in the 1960s established an "artist room" where all of the books on one artist were shelved together under the artists' name. It has been very successful. The students loved it. It encourages browsing and serendipitous discoveries. Even though we no longer serve as the library for this school we have maintained the artist room arrangement because our members and even our curators like it so much. The only drawback is that it makes doing inventories of the collection much more difficult.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Shelving dilemma

Hi,

We are a new art, design & media library and have a rapidly growing collection  of about 15,000 volumes.
We use the LC classification for our collection.

We have had some feedback about the way some of the books are shelved, to make browsing easier.  For example:  a student has pointed out that all books on Van Gogh should be shelved together irrespective of whether they are on his paintings, drawings, biography, criticism etc.  This is because based on LC  categories, the books are shelved according to their genre.

Have any of you experienced a similar issue.  Would appreciate any feedback on how we could deal with this.

Thank you
