I agree with Jonathan. I recall the ordeals and expense of a printed directory when I was ARLIS/NA president ten years ago and the complaints the product always generated. Having a 'live' version that can be updated as needed makes sense. Creating a pdf version of the handbook and directory at least once a year would also be practical: members could print/download the files they wanted and HQ could print an archival paper copy. - Ed Ed Teague Head, Architecture & Allied Arts Library University of Oregon, Eugene On Mon, 20 Aug 2007 07:47:11 -0400, "Franklin, Jonathan" <[log in to unmask]> wrote: > > Lest this seem like a one-sided debate: > > I have to say I almost never use the printed Directory now and instinctively use the on-line. I would prefer the considerable money and effort required to produce the printed version (as the volunteer editor of a recent one, I know whereof I speak) to go into maintaining and improving the on-line. > > And I would happily print off a pdf version in case of need – it’s something I do all the time with long documents. > > Jonathan > > Jonathan Franklin > Chief, Library, Archives and Research Fellowship Program > National Gallery of Canada > 380 Sussex Drive > PO Box 427 , Station A > Ottawa , Ontario > K1N 9N4 > Canada > telephone (613) 990 0590 > fax (613) 990 6190 > email [log in to unmask] > __________________________________________________________________ Mail submissions to [log in to unmask] For information about joining ARLIS/NA see: http://www.arlisna.org/join.html Send administrative matters (file requests, subscription requests, etc) to [log in to unmask] ARLIS-L Archives and subscription maintenance: http://lsv.uky.edu/archives/arlis-l.html Questions may be addressed to list owner (Judy Dyki) at: [log in to unmask] -- Edward H.
