Portraits
of a nation
Oxford University’s
collection of portraits includes unique images of individuals from all walks of
life including British and foreign monarchs, leaders of nations, scientists,
writers, scholars and artists, who have shaped the history of the nation both
from within these shores and in the world at large.
Now, for the
first time, you can see a number of images from this unique collection
online.
Portraits from
the Examination Schools and Pembroke College have been digitized and catalogued
as part of a one-year pilot project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research
Council (AHRC), and a selection of these portraits are now available on open
access at AHDS Visual Arts: http://www.vads.ahds.ac.uk/collections/OP.html
Dating from
c.1450 to the present day, the collection includes paintings, drawings,
sculpture, medals and photographs by celebrated artists and others of regional
significance. Second in size only to the National Portrait Gallery’s
collection, which is the largest collection of portraits in the world,
Oxford
University’s portrait
collection complements that held in the National Portrait Gallery and is of
world-wide interest and significance. Ultimately, the project aims to
publish a catalogue of portraits throughout the University of Oxford and all its constituent
colleges.

The relationship between drawing and ceramics is a relatively unexplored area of contemporary practice. Most ceramicists also work in other media in
addition to clay and yet many of us remain unaware of that work and of any connections that could be made between these creative processes. This exhibition provides an opportunity to see that ‘unknown’ output and to expose more of the creative processes involved in the making of pots.
This association between the artist’s two dimensional work and their pottery is explored through four themes:
-Drawing which parallels ceramic practice, ie work which is connected to but does not directly inform the production of
ceramic
- Drawing that is used to develop design ideas for ceramic
- Drawing as a tool for recording aspects of ceramic process
- New approaches to ceramic design using computer technology
Artists represented in the exhibition include Anna Adams, Nancy Angus, Felicity Aylieff, Sharon Blakey, Kyra Cane, John Chambers, Claire Curneen, Stephen Dixon, Helen Felcey, Susan Halls, Ewen
Henderson, Tavs Jørgensen, Walter Keeler, Rob Kesseler, Bernard Leach, Bethan Lloyd Worthington, Jim Malone, Alex McErlain, Eric James Mellon, Lucie Rie, James Tower, Robin Welch and Scottie Wilson.
This exhibition is a collaborative project developed between MMU’s
Faculty of Art and Design and the Manchester Institute for Research in Art and Design (MIRIAD), Manchester Metropolitan University’s Special Collections and the Peter Scott Gallery Art Collection at Lancaster University. The exhibition also features work from the Yorkshire Museum Trust (from the Bill Ismay and Dean Milner-White Collections); from the Lucie Rie and Bernard Leach Archives at the Crafts Study Centre, University College for the Creative Arts, Farnham; the Anthony Shaw Collection and from the private collections of the ceramicists themselves.
