A large part of what my colleagues and I do while working on our institutional
repository effort at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is participate in
the scholarly communications conversation on campus. We try to explain the
importance of authors protecting their rights when sending works to publishers
and how they can obtain rights for works they have already published. See
the 'For Authors' section of our I.R. (ScholarWorks) for more on what we try to
explain. http://scholarworks.umass.edu/for_authors.html

There are only three librarians (2 FTE) here who are directly responsible for
the Institutional Repository effort, but we've received support from some of
the other librarians in terms of getting the word out. We see the subject
liaisons, who already have relationships with the faculty/departments, as a
natural place to look for help when trying to make the I.R. scalable.

We have also developed relationships with the Office of the Provost to see if
there is a way to use the Annual Faculty Review Process to
systematically reach the faculty.

Feel free to contact me or the UMass ScholarWorks Team at
