Oxford University Press launches major new encyclopedia: The Grove
Encyclopedia of American Art
Oxford University Press (OUP) is pleased to announce the launch of a
major new encyclopedia of American art and architecture. This
long-term project will result in an entirely new and comprehensive
encyclopedia of American art reconceptualized with new methodology and
topics significant to American art today. One decade after the
publication of the landmark Dictionary of Art (1996, 34 vols), OUP
embarks on another ground-breaking art historical project. This
five-volume publication will draw upon Grove Art Online's
(www.groveart.com <http://www.groveart.com/> ) content, and will
expand, update, and add hundreds of new entries on subjects, such as
Public Art, Digital Art, Romare Bearden, Daniel Libeskind, Roger Crum,
and more.
The encyclopedia will be headed by Joan Marter, Distinguished
Professor of Art History at Rutgers University. Dr. Marter has
published widely on American art, modern art, and women artists,
including her most recent publication Abstract Expressionism: The
International Context (Rutgers, 2007). Dr. Marter is editor in chief
of the prestigious Woman's Art Journal and has received numerous
grants and awards including, Pollock-Krasner Foundation/Stony Brook
Research Fellowship, Getty Research Institute Grant, Whitney
fellowship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the George
Wittenborn Award (ARLIS/NA). She serves as the executor of the estate
of American sculptor Dorothy Dehner, and has also served on the board
of directors of the College Art Association.
The Grove Encyclopedia of American Art is the recipient of a generous
three-year grant from the Henry Luce Foundation.
We invite the original contributors of Grove articles as well as new
scholars to participate in this monumental American art project.
