Dear Colleagues,

We recently launched the Artists' Book Collection, an online resource that serves as a finding aid to the artists' book collection at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Kohler Art Library. Although it is still a work in progress, it provides access to a large portion of the collection:

http://digital.library.wisc.edu/1711.dl/ArtistsBks

Presently, the physical artists’ book collection contains over 800 titles. The database indexes approximately 760 of those titles, over 500 of which have one to four images to visually represent the structure and/or content of the book. With the goal to create a “visual finding aid” to the entire artists’ book collection, the database will be expanded and updated on a periodic basis. In the coming months, images will be added to those records that currently only have metadata.

Each record in the database contains the title of the book, creator’s name, publisher, date (if known), subjects, physical description, and a complete transcription of the colophon. In addition to searching names of book artists or press names, one can also search type of book structure, type of binding, medium/technique, and contributor roles. All words in each record are searchable. One can browse the entire collection as well.

If you click on "About the collection" you will find a sampling of book artists, presses, book structures, bindings, medium/techniques, and contributor roles used in the database.

The metadata was created in-house at the Kohler Art Library by students studying book arts and the imaging was done by the General Library System's UW Digital Content Group. After five years of work, we are happy to provide access to this wonderful collection of artists' books. Again, we plan to continue to update the database as we add new titles to the collection.
