As someone who wrote her Ph.D. dissertation on "The
Art-Journal" I can attest to the relatively poor quality of
the microfilm version, although I was, and still am, lucky to have access
to the film as well as the print (the pre-1849 volumes of the journal
under its original title, "The Art-Union," are exceedingly
rare). I thought at one point there might be the possibility of
"The Art Journal" entering into the C19 Thompson Gale suite (at
least I've lobbied strongly for its inclusion) and I also believe there
is a project in the UK to digitize a core selection of 19C art
periodicals. I couldn't agree more that "The Art Journal"
should be at the top of any such list, not only to increase its
availability, but to be able to search its 73-year history (that's 876
monthly issues, variously 16 and 32 pages per issue, continuously
published in the UK and later in the US through Appleton, without a
break from 1839 to 1912--a whole lot of art/cultural history, and not
just British).
Best,
Katherine

Dear Gail,
Our volumes of Art Journal (London) are falling apart at Emory,
too! I think I had asked JSTOR a few years back to put this on
their list of potential items to be digitized and even offered our copies
for the process. Maybe it is time to revisit.
I would also be interested in hearing what you learn about the quality of
the microfilm.

One of our curators is interested in
recommending that our library purchase the Art Journal (London) on
microfilm. Volumes 11-74 (1849-1912) were filmed by
University Microfilms.
Our experience with some of other
microfilmed journals has not always been satisfactory - print was too
small to read, print from the page on the other side "bled"
through into the page you were reading, etc.
Does anyone have experience with
using the Art Journal on microfilm? It has been difficult for us to
locate a library which would even loan the microfilm of one of these
volumes, so we have not used it ourselves.
Thank you.
