The collection of illustrated Italian printed books in the Museum's Department of Drawings and Prints, which is particularly strong in Renaissance editions, has been the focus of three grants from the New York State Library Conservation and Preservation Program since 2003. Wendy Thompson, Assistant Curator in the Department of Drawings and Prints, will discuss the focus and range of the collection, with a survey of highlights that traces the history of early book illustration and includes rare texts by Savonarola, Piccolomini, and Aretino. Geoffrey Taylor, Research Scholar in the Department of Drawings and Prints, will discuss the exceptional collection of architectural treatises, with emphasis on the access they provide to the history of architects’ training and the exchange of design vocabularies between drawings, prints, and construction. Mindell Dubansky, Associate Museum Librarian and book conservator in the Watson Library, will explain the survey process and
describe characteristics of early Italian bindings. Georgia Southworth, Book Conservator in the Department of Drawing and Prints for the term of the grant, will discuss a few of the major treatments she has carried out on the Italian books.
