> Risk Assessment and Crisis Communication

> Conducting a vulnerability analysis and risk assessment gives institutions the vital information necessary to help minimize the likelihood of a disaster. In this workshop, participants will learn how these tools fit into an institution's emergency planning and how to conduct an analysis of risk and vulnerability, essential for evaluating the types of emergencies that could affect collections. A presentation by a crisis communications expert will be included to address public relations strategies for emergency situations.

> Participants in this workshop will learn how to assign responsibilities for key emergency preparedness roles, write or update an emergency plan, use practical decision-making skills during an emergency, set pre- and post-disaster action priorities for collections, and > "> exercise> "> their institutions> '> emergency plans. There will also be discussion of projects of the Heritage Emergency National Task Force, including Alliance for Response, an initiative to build partnerships with emergency responders in Philadelphia and other U.S. cities. New national programs and resources inspired by Hurricane Katrina will be described and participants will be introduced to the Field Guide to Emergency Response, a new publication and video that is designed to help staff organize disaster response functions and tackle common threats to collections.

> Attending both workshops is not required, however it is recommended. Individually, the workshops will provide valuable information; together they will provide a framework to help institutions understand, address, and prepare for emergencies.

> These workshops are intended for staff who are involved in collections care activities or have responsibility for the safety of collections, including librarians, archivists, curators, collections managers, stewards of historic house museums, site and facility managers, and security and safety staff. Disaster planning encompasses all facets of an institution> '> s operations and requires the involvement of all staff. Therefore, sending more than one person from an institution is encouraged.

> Julie Page, the lead speaker for both workshops> , is Preservation Librarian for the University of California, San Diego Libraries, and coordinator for the statewide California Preservation Program and SILDRN (San Diego/Imperial County Libraries Disaster Response Network). She is a trainer for the American Institute for Conservation of Historic & Artistic Works (AIC) NEH-fun> ded Emergency Response for Cultural Institutions program, and has presented workshops for the American Library Association, Special Libraries Association, California Libraries Association, National Conference on Cultural Property Protection, and the Heritage Emergency National Task Force.

> Michael Smith, Ph.D., is Director of La Salle University> '> s graduate program in Professional Communication and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in public relations, organizational communication, and conflict. Smith has taught in La Salle> '> s Master> '> s programs in Prague and Athens. He has also worked with a variety of nonprofit organizations and as a trainer for La Salle University> '> s Nonprofit Center

> Jane Long, Vice President for Emergency Programs at Heritage Preservation, has served as director of the Heritage Emergency National Task Force since it was formed in 1995 by Heritage Preservation and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. She is co-author of Heritage Preservation> '> s book, Caring for Your Family Treasures and has served as special projects coordinator for the President> '> s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.

> The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) is a non-profit conservation laboratory serving other non-profit cultural, educational, and research institutions, as well as private individuals and organizations throughout the United States. Founded in 1977, CCAHA specializes in the treatment of works of art and historic artifacts on paper, such as prints, maps, posters, historic wallpaper, photographs, rare books, scrapbooks, and manuscripts, as well as parchment and papyrus.
