Several years ago, I started offering an annual Sara R.
Irvine Artist's Book Award (in the name of my daughter) to be given to an
outstanding artist's book created while a student is enrolled in a School of FA
class, e.g., printmaking, photography, graphic design, etc. The first
year, studio faculty judged the submissions and the past two years, I have
judged the submissions. Students are required to deposit one copy of the
award winner in the FA Library as part of our Artists' Books Collection.
The award is $350.00. (I prepared the guidelines for the award and can
send them to you if you are interested.)
I have been building our collection
since the late 1960s and recently noticed that donors, the School of FA, etc.
make annual awards for students in various areas but none were specifically for
artists' books. Anyway, I just decided to do it!! I plan to continue
making this award annually (even post-retirement). My greatest challenge
has been to get students to actually prepare submissions to be judged. The
award is so new that faculty and students seem to forget the process. I
had to extend the deadline at least once this past fall to get enough noteworthy
submissions. bj

Hurrah for the book arts! The art of the book! Artists'
books and artist's books! Livres d'artistes! And all those who encourage their
continuance!
We are considering starting an annual/biennial Stanford
student artists' book competition. While we have no specific book program,
classes in the Art Dept. are offered on making photography books, plus the usual
printmaking, etc.
Have any of you sponsored an artists' book
competition/exhibition?
How do you judge the submissions?
Who judges
the submissions?
Do not judge, just exhibit?
Prize?
Big
Prize?
Exhibition?
Web site with competition specifics
available?
Please respond to the list as this info will certainly be of
interest to many.
Yours in Bookness, whatever form it might
take,
Peter Blank
