For ten years, Broward County Library's Bienes Museum of the Modern
Book, The Dianne and Michael Bienes Special Collections and Rare Book
Library has co-sponsored with the Florida Center for the Book, an annual
$2,000 Florida Artists' Book Prize. The criteria for entering the
competition are:
2007 FLORIDA ARTISTS' BOOK PRIZE
Broward County Library's Bienes Museum of the Modern Book, The Dianne
and Michael Bienes Special Collections and Rare Book Library, and the
Florida Center for the Book, are pleased to announce the continuing
sponsorship of the annual Florida Artists' Book Prize.
The eleventh annual prize of $2,000 will be awarded in 2008. An
exhibition of a selection of the entries and an award ceremony will be
held in the Spring of 2008, in the Bienes Museum of the Modern Book,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
CRITERIA FOR ENTRY
* The entry must be created or published in an edition (i.e., more
than one copy), but cannot be a trade edition (i.e., produced
commercially by a publishing house for sale nationally or
internationally) nor can it be a one-of-a-kind.
* The artist's primary residence must be the State of Florida.
* The book entered in the competition must have been created or
published in the calendar year 2006.
* Completed entry forms and a copy of each book must be received
in the Bienes Center by January 14th, 2008.
The prize-winning artists' book becomes the property of the Bienes
Center. All other books entered will be returned after the judging,
except those titles selected for inclusion in the Florida Artists' Book
Prize Exhibition, which will tentatively be held in the galleries of the
Bienes Museum from March-May 2008. The retained books will be returned
after the end of the exhibition run.
The prize will be administered jointly by the Bienes Museum of the
Modern Book and the Florida Center for the Book

adjudicated in February of 2008 by a jury comprised of: Ruth & Marvin
Sackner, of the Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry (Miami
Beach, FL); Arthur Jaffe of Florida Atlantic University's Arthur and
Mata Jaffe Collection of Books as Aesthetic Objects (Boca Raton, FL),
and Jean Trebbi, former director of the Florida Center for the Book.

Hurrah for the book arts! The art of the book! Artists' books and
artist's books! Livres d'artistes! And all those who encourage their
continuance!
We are considering starting an annual/biennial Stanford student artists'
book competition. While we have no specific book program, classes in the
Art Dept. are offered on making photography books, plus the usual
printmaking, etc.
Have any of you sponsored an artists' book competition/exhibition?
How do you judge the submissions?
Who judges the submissions?
Do not judge, just exhibit?
Prize?
Big Prize?
Exhibition?
Web site with competition specifics available?

many.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has generated many fine book artists
over the past thirty years and continues to offer a few courses in this
area. I know that the University of the Arts in Philadelphia has a very
active program in book arts.
Many of us have wonderful artists' book collections in our libraries,
but where are the best places to learn/study this art form?
This may be of interest to others, so please reply to the arlis-l list.
