February: Concept Books, Kenneth Anger, Joan Jonas, Justin Lieberman, Art Calls
Over the last few years we have seen the zine movement grow into
project based publishing--more topical and more ambitious than ever.
This month we feature two standout "concept" books, LABMAG
and Resurrection. For each book, dozens of artists were invited
to contribute projects based on a larger editorial idea.
LABMAG, a new experimental magazine/book launched
in December 2006 at the NYC art and technology center Eyebeam with
presentations by Vito Acconci, poet Jena Osman, artist Adam Pendleton,
and designers Sarah Gephart and David Reinfurt of O-R-G. Dubbed
a "framework and collection device", each invited contributor
received personal notes from the editor, which they either engaged
or ignored in their submissions. Imagined as a laboratory for experimentation,The
roundup of artists, designers and writers involved in the project
is truly an impressive one:
Acconci Studio, Cory Arcangel, Art & Language, Pierre Bismuth,
Matthew Brannon, Jason Dodge, Daniel Eatock, Experimental Jetset,
Liam Gillick, Renee Green, Fons Hickmann, Thomas Hirschhorn, Christine
Lemke & Jan Timme, Dave Mckenzie, Mevis & Van Deursen, MIT
Center for Advanced Visual Studies, N55, Page Neal, Sean O'Reilly,
O-R-G, Jena Osman, Paper Rad, Seth Price, Project Projects, Pedro
Reyes, Kelley Walker, Ian Wilson, Johannes Wohseifer, Jordan Wolfson,
Carey Young and Scott Zieher
For
Resurrection, editor Jon Santos
invited 50+ contributors to "bring something back from the
dead". Inspired by a cemetery visit in the Phillipines where
Santos encountered a community of families squatting in-between
mausoleums, he left deeply aware of the shifting line between life
and death. The drawings, paintings, collage, photography, video,
architecture and costumes that comprise the book range from the
humorous to the personal and poignant to sharp social commentary.
The diverse group of primarily New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles
based contributors includes:
Ash Burns, Andrew Kuo, Andrew Paynter, Anton Esteban, Antonia
kojuharova, Asha Schechter, Aurellio Valle, Babak Radboy, Bob Linder,
Carol Taveras, Cendrine Colin, Christopher Ruess, Christian Jankowski,
Dain Blodorn, Dana Kline, Daniel Jackson, David Merten, Dennis West,
DJ Language, Doug Lee, Emi Takahara, Emily Counts, Eri Shoji, Eugenie
Huang, Fatima Al Qadiri, Francine Spiegel, Glynnis Mcdaris, Gordon
Hull, Hisham Bharoocha, Isabelle Lumpkin, Jackson Von Pfostl, Jane
Virga, Jen Yazon, Jennifer Juniper Stratford, Jeremy Campbell, Jill
Bradshaw, Joe Malagrio, Jon-Paul Villegas, Josh Kline, Juan Mendez,
Kamau Patton, Kazumi Asamura, Ken Miller, Kim West, Kon Trubkovich,
KT Auleta, Mariah Robertson, Masayo Kishi, Nathaniel Hamon/Slang
International, Peter Simensky, Peter Sutherland, S.E. Nash, Shu
Hung, Sue Costabile, Susannah Sayler, The Blowup, Tim Koh, Timothy
Hull, Trevor Shimizu, Wes Lang, Wowch and Wyeth Hansen.
The other area of great finds this month is in our media collection.
For those of you with spotty VHS versions of Kenneth Anger's films
slowly disintegrating on your bookshelf, now is the time to act.
Fantoma finally released their first volume in a series of Kenneth
Anger's collected work on DVD. Impeccably restored, and covering
the first half of Anger's career, this DVD is an essential item
for newcomers and avid fans alike. The
Films of Kenneth Anger Vol. 1 contains:
Fireworks (1947)
Puce Moment (1949)
Rabbit's Moon (1950, the rarely seen original 16 minute version)
Eaux d'Artifice (1953)
Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954)
The DVD also comes with a 36 page book, audio commentary by Kenneth
Anger, rare outtakes and behind the scenes images, sketches and
plans for unproduced films and other surprises. So, so, so much
better than that ratty VHS!
Another DVD of note is the Joan Jonas documentary
Study
of the Artist With Dog, which premiered in December 2006
at New York's Anthology Film Archives. Director Brigitte Cornand
followed Jonas as she traveled from her New York loft to her Cape
Breton house and studio. Documenting her numerous encounters with
the artist, Cornand captured Joan Jonas at work on her latest large-scale
performance piece for the Dia:Beacon,"The Shape, the Scent,
the Feel of Things," scored by Jason Moran and inspired
by the work of the late German art historian extraordinaire Aby
Warburg.
up and coming artist
Justin Lieberman's
new book, part catalogue raisonne, part artist's book and part illuminated
manuscript, is a printed rendition of his disordered aesthetic.
Lieberman's writings and artworks explore advertising, transgression,
cultural and racial stereotypes and the dilemma of creative production
within commodity culture. Lieberman's sculptures, collages, and
works on paper form an interactive, often hilarious, cultural critique.
In "Agency: Open House" at Zach Feuer Gallery,
the artist set up a rugged reproduction of an advertising agency,
complete with its own "boardroom". Lieberman graduated
from Yale's MFA program in 2004, and has had solo shows at Zach
Feuer Gallery, Sutton Lane Locust Projects, LFL Gallery, Allston
Skirt Gallery, and Kantor Feuer Gallery.
From the vaults, we have one copy of
Art Calls,
a 1997 CD compilation of soundworks by Andrea Clavadetsher &
Eric Schumacher, Maurizio Cattelan, Douglas Gordon, Peter Fend,
Peter Land, Ann Lislegaard, Alastair Mackinven, Paul McCarthy, Christian
Schmidt-Rasmussen, David Shrigley, Julia Scher, Georgina Starr,
Annika Ström and Gitte Villesen. All artists were invited to
record a word-, sound- or music piece on a tape. Contributions were
then transferred onto answering machines with a connecting phone
number. The "visitor" could call up each number and listen
to the exhibition. All works - except Maurizio Cattelan's piece
- are collected on this CD in full length. On your mark, get set....

Resurrection
Resurrection is a publication that compiles images and texts created by over 50 contributers by invitation of Jon Santos. The call for submissions asked that people "bring something back from the dead".
The publication was inspired by a cemetery visit in the Phillipines where Jon encountered a child who was born and raised amongst graves and wilted flowers, a community made up of families squatting in-between mausoleums. The fine line
between life and death became eerily apparent, and the analogy of life cycles within popular culture triggered a concept. Resurrection is an amorphous and omnipresent theme existing in various mediums such as music, fine art and design.
The work in this book ranges from drawings, paintings, collage to photography, video, architecture and costume.
The diverse group of primarily New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles based contributers range from a pool of various artistic mediums.
Contributors include:
Ash Burns, Andrew Kuo, Andrew Paynter, Anton Esteban, Antonia kojuharova,
Asha Schechter, Aurellio Valle, Babak Radboy, Bob Linder, Carol

The Films of Kenneth Anger Volume 1
Cinematic magician, legendary provocateur, author of the infamous HOLLYWOOD BABYLON books and creator of some of the most striking and beautiful works in the history of film, Kenneth Anger is a singular figure in post-war American
culture. A major influence on everything from the films of Martin Scorsese, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and David Lynch to the pop art of Andy Warhol to MTV, Anger's work serves as a talisman of universal symbols and personal obsessions,
combining myth, artifice and ritual to render cinema with the power of spell or incantation. Covering the first half of Anger's career, from his landmark debut FIREWORKS in 1947 to his epic bacchanalia INAGURATION OF THE PLEASURE DOME,
Fantoma is very proud to present the long-awaited first volume of films by this revolutionary and groundbreaking maverick, painstakingly restored and presented on DVD for the first time.
Contains the films:
Fireworks (1947)
Puce Moment (1949)
Rabbit's Moon (1950, the rarely seen original 16 minute version)
Eaux d'Artifice (1953)
Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome (1954)

Justin Lieberman
Artist, Critic and Cultural Theorist Justin Lieberman presents
a publication somewhere in between a catalogue raisonne, an artist’s
book and an illuminated manuscript outlining several of his exhibitions
and special projects, including paintings, drawings, photography,
sculptures, video, and sound installations. Lieberman’s writings
and artworks deal with advertising, transgression, cultural and
racial stereotypes and the dilemma of creative production within
commodity culture. The book includes Lieberman’s essays on
these subjects as well as his own work re-presented through a cut-up
technique, which both acknowledges and parodies that of Brian Gyson
and William S. Burroughs.
