Hello, I am new to this list, so I hope I am asking an appropriate question. I work at a university library as the liaison to the art & art history department. We have a new digital services department, which will eventually be heading up our institutional repository, but in the meantime they are involved in various scanning projects for faculty members and units on campus. We were approached by the person who works in the art department's slide library over in the arts building to have all of the images in an introductory art history textbook scanned and put on individual CDs for each faculty member who teaches the class using this textbook. Both I and the head of digital services (an archivist by training) were quite uncomfortable with this request, and we told the the person from the slide library that we did not think this would be OK as far as copyright was concerned. She informed us that she made slides from all the images in the textbook; additionally, the art history f aculty members were surprised and rather dismayed by our attitude--they acted like we were paranoid. We want to have good relations with the department, but we don't want to participate in a potentially dangerous project. We have searched our databases and the free internet, but we have not been able to come up with any helpful information. Has anyone on this list encountered a similar situation? Many thanks in advance.
