Art Curator/Registrar

downtown Los Angeles, O'Melveny's Los Angeles office is the firm's largest
office and home to more than 250 lawyers.  We have an immediate opening for
an Art Curator/Registrar to oversee the firm's collection of over 2,900
photographs, graphic works on paper, paintings and sculptures.  

 

Duties include on-going, continual research for affordable, quality art
appropriate for OMM offices, both domestic and international, obtained by
visiting dealers, galleries, publishers and artist studios to assemble
collections of work; providing artist biographical and exhibition
provenance, press releases and explanatory information pertaining to media
and technique; preparing detailed presentations and meeting with designers
and architects to discuss art, furniture, plant placement and lighting of
existing space and expansions; offering art tours, discussing the
collection's history, media techniques and processes, and discourse of
specific pieces for OMM personnel, institutions and private organizations;
maintaining the integrity of the collection by monitoring condition of art
and frames to provide periodic cleaning, conservation and upgrading of
mounts and frames, and scheduling of appropriate repairs; preparing and
maintaining a comprehensive budget and finance report for the collection,
detailing all related expenses and activities, with projections for future
needs and developing budgets and formulas for calculations related to costs
and quantity of artwork needed per square foot of office space; working
closely with frame designers to assure that attention is paid to every
detail in complying with archival framing specifications for each piece of
artwork; coordinating insurance, transport, storage and installations with
local art handler firms; organizing documents for customs, duty and Value
Added Tax for international shipping, insurance, transport and hiring of
foreign art handlers; maintaining detailed records of activities and reports
to the Art Committee by memoranda and conference calls every two months;
other duties as needed.

 

Requirements include experience in evaluating art quality, printing
techniques and medium with a developed eye for design and installation
placement, as well as experience in maintaining a collection, requisite
records and cataloguing, including registration techniques, labeling and use
of a digital camera.  Must be knowledgeable with computers (posting art for
viewing; cataloguing; preparing financial reports).  Must have superior
communication skills, both written and verbal, and strong organizational and
interpersonal skills with an ability to organize and direct crews of
installers and art handlers.  The ability to exhibit initiative and follow
through on projects, negotiate discounts with dealers and publishers before
acquisitions are made and travel, both domestically and internationally, is
required.  Must possess a Bachelor of Arts' and/or graduate degree in Art
History, with classes in Museum Studies and Gallery Design or equivalent
experience by working in a gallery or museum environment, maintaining and
managing a large collection of fine art.
