Architecture, Design and Digital Services Librarian

 

Position Duties

 

Collection Development/ManagementResponsible for collection development and management in architecture and design, including ongoing assessment of collection strengths and weaknesses in relation to institutional needs.  Establishes and maintains collection development policies for architecture and design in cooperation with the faculty and other librarians.  Selects materials for acquisition in all formats, manages serial subscriptions and cancellations, monitors and manages approval plans, and manages the materials budget.  Interacts with staff in the Social Sciences, Humanities & Arts Acquisitions and Digital Collections Services departments to maintain timely and effective acquisitions workflows.  Manages endowed and other gift funds for architecture and design.  Interacts with donors and prospective donors and works with Library Development staff on fundraising and development activities and projects.  Evaluates gift materials, makes preservation and conservation decisions, and selects materials from current acquisitions and from Arts Library stacks for transfer to the UC Southern Regional Library Facility (a remote storage facility).  Works with the Performing Arts Special Collections Librarian to identify, assess, and acquire archives and other special materials.  Participates in UC systemwide shared collection activities.

 

Reference and Instruction – Provides general Arts Library reference desk service in all the Library’s subject areas (architecture, art, design, film, television, theater) and specialized research assistance, as needed, within the librarian’s areas of subject expertise.  Promotes and provides instructional services to the faculty and students in the Departments of Architecture and Design|Media Arts and to all library users interested in any aspects of these disciplines.  Works with faculty in the Departments of Architecture and Design|Media Arts to design and provide course-related/course-integrated instruction to upper division and graduate classes.  Provides general tours, orientations, lectures, and interactive user instruction.  Participates in the library-wide Information Literacy Program and assists in the design, delivery, and assessment of in-person and Web-based information literacy sessions for undergraduate and graduate students.  Develops reference guides, including web resources, print handouts, and online tutorials in assigned subject areas.

 

Digital Services – Identifies new digital resources, arranges for and communicates with faculty about trials, and coordinates acquisition of such resources.  Administers and promotes all digital image databases related to the fields of art, architecture and design.  Investigates and assists with the development of new digitization projects, in coordination with the Digital Library Program.  Functions as the Arts Library liaison for projects involving the digitization of slide collections in the architecture and art history departments, including the current AUD image collection.

 

Administration – Participates in departmental and library-wide planning and policy development.  Represents the Arts Library on committees and task forces as needed.

 

Required Qualifications

 

ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library or Information Science OR significant graduate-level coursework toward such a degree OR equivalent education and experience (subject expertise combined with professional library education and/or experience).  Subject expertise and/or coursework in architecture and/or design.  Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent public services in an academic or research library.  Familiarity with Western European languages sufficient to provide effective reference work and collection development.  Knowledge of, and familiarity with, digital image databases in the fields of art, architecture, and design. Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and software, the Web, and library-relevant information technology applications.  Working knowledge of standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint or other productivity software.  Excellent organizational, time, and project management skills as well as analytical skills, initiative, and demonstrated project management skills.  Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.  Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently and to promote teamwork among colleagues.  Commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and ability to work with a diverse student and faculty population and library users.  Capacity to thrive in the exciting, ambiguous, future-oriented environment of a world-class research institution and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities.  Commitment to professional issues, demonstrated through strong interest in local or national committee work, research, publication.

 

Desired Qualifications

 

Advanced degree in art, architecture or design.  Knowledge and understanding of current trends in information technology as they apply to collection development and management and the provision of reference and research services.  Experience in providing reference services and/or instruction in a large, decentralized academic library setting.  Experience with the design, provision, and evaluation of information literacy programs for upper division and graduate students.  Experience in the development and implementation of digital image projects, with an understanding of current controlled vocabulary and metadata standards, such as AAT (Art and Architecture Thesaurus) and VRA Core.  Record of scholarly research and professional activity and involvement.

 

Salary and Benefits

 

Assistant Librarian I – Librarian IV ($40,008 – $85,740).  Salary and appointment level based on experience and qualifications.  UC
