I'm currently on a task force that's looking at redesigning our periodicals area to make it more attractive to patrons and easier to use. We have a significant amount of compact shelving that's either empty or storing non-library stuff (which we hope to evict). We have a lot of large microfilm cabinets and would like to reduce their number. I'm wondering if it's possible to repurpose some of that compact shelving to store microfilm and/or microcard, by using some kind of shelving inserts or storage containers that could fit on compact shelving. I have a feelling there will be items in the "stuff that hardly ever gets used but faculty can't bear to part with" category, so easy and immediate patron access is not necessarily a primary requirement.

Does anyone know of any off-the-shelf items we could use, or have recommendations for vendors that might be able to produce custom items? Please reply directly with any and all suggestions.
