Builder Levy will present a slide lecture on his work and the new publication Builder Levy Photographer.

In Levy's photographs we come face to face with persevering individuals in inner-city neighborhoods in New York City; in communities in the hills and "hollers" and inside the coal mines of Appalachia; on the central Asian steppe of Mongolia; in Cuba; and at civil rights and peace demonstrations in the 1960s and the new millennium, including recent marches to stop the war and bring the troops home from Iraq.

He has been making photographs for more than forty years and for thirty-five of these he taught at-risk adolescents as a New York City schoolteacher. He is the recipient of the highly prized Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Photography. His photographs have appeared in more than 170 exhibitions worldwide, including more than 40 solo shows. For a listing of his upcoming exhibitions please visit his website at www.builderlevy.com

"Levy has been steadfast in his belief that, in addition to its narrative dimension, a photograph is an object with its own distinctive aesthetic character. His silver prints reveal the rich tonalities that are intrinsic to the medium. The photographs in this book are a testament to the fact that these intertwined objectives [art, social documentary and street photography] can produce works of power and beauty." From the introduction by Naomi Rosenblum

Elevators access the 6th floor after 6p.m.
All events are FREE and subject to last minute change or cancellation.
