New Museum Store Library Service

Welcome to the October HOTLIST . We celebrate two of October's major holidays- Oktoberfest and Halloween- this month with a smattering of titles covering the Leipzig School and a few somewhat spooky/evil publications. New German Painting, Life After Death, and Christoph Ruckhaeberle: Die Flasche Bakbuk will certainly bring you up to date on all the Leipzig hubbub.

Fancy Coffins To Make Yourself, not so surprisingly a hot ticket at the New Museum Store, will surely inspire the art students out there. We can only imagine the projects spurned by this creepy little publication thus far. Dark , an exhibition catalog from the illustrious Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, explores the murky underbelly of contemporary culture through projects by Luc Tuymans, Marc Bijl, Rita Ackermann, Banks Violette, Angus Fairhurst, Folkert de Jong, Dirk Braeckman, Terence Koh, Avner Ben-Gal and Kara Walker. I Heart Darkness , which is dark in title only, is a fantastic publication by the likes of Los Angeles-based outfit [log in to unmask]&http://www.2ndcannons.com/index.html"> 2nd Cannons . The book is a collection of 14 casual interviews with artists such as Ami Tallman, Sue De Beer, Sterling Ruby, Ashley Macomber, Gus Van Sant, Brian Kennon and Kevin Christy. Lastly, for the truly evil, we offer up the Otto Mühl. Retrospektive from the Revolver Blanco series.

HOT TIP - We have additional copies of North Drive Press #3, which is now out of print. Also, check our list for Kehinde Wiley's first major monograph, direct from the Columbus Museum of Art.

New German Painting
by Christoph Tannert

Born in Germany in the years following the collapse of the Communist regime, the New Leipzig School started when a group of classmates at the Leipzig Academy rediscovered figurative art. Their paintings reflected the melancholy that pervaded East Germany as it struggled with capitalism, high unemployment and depopulation. Fifteen year later, paintings by the Leipzig school and its related movement, Dresden Pop, are conquering the international art market. The authors take on this important trend one painter at a time, and also analyse the work of other contemporary German artists. They examine each artist’s oeuvre on its own merit and consider various factors behind the movements—the onset of the digital age, social disillusionment and individual protest. Breathtaking reproductions allow readers to form their own ideas about what constitutes and drives new German painting, and understand its significance around the world.

Life After Death: New Leipzig Paintings from the Rubell Family Collection
Edited and with essays by Mark Coetzee and Laura Steward Heon

In December 2000, a group of five young German artists, all recent graduates of the prestigious Leipzig Art Academy, organized a small exhibition of their works in Leipzig. Unsurprisingly, the exhibition attracted no notice from the international contemporary art community. From that humble beginning, the "New Leipzig School" has expanded to a dozen artists and grown to be an international phenomenon. In 2005, MASS MoCA presented the country’s foremost collection of paintings from the New Leipzig School built by the Rubell Family in Miami and what followed was an international avalanche of attention and demand. That exhibition, Life After Death, and this corresponding publication, include 62 key works by the most sought-after painters of the moment, including Tilo Baumgartel, Tim Eitel, Martin Kobe, Neo Rauch, Christoph Ruckhaeberle, David Schnell and Matthias Weischer.

Christoph Ruckhaeberle: Die Flasche Bakbuk
Text by James Trainor, Hans-Werner Schmidt, and Nicole Langbein; Interview with the artist by David Salle

This beautifully illustrated book catalogs the work Christoph Ruckhaeberle, a prominent member of the Leipzig School, along with artists like Tim Eitel, David Schnell and Neo Rauch, from 2002-2005. His blocky, bright portraits, city scapes and scenes from urban life, packed into stage-like canvases, help him stand out as a member of this group of young artists who gain more prominence every day. Within the book are over 90 richly-colored reproductions.
