Miami-Dade Public Library System’s

Art Services and Exhibitions Division presents

A Conversation about the Artmobile!

    and closing reception for

The Artmobile: Away from the Stacks and Back

Thursday, September 7, 2006, 7:00 – 8:30pm

Main Library auditorium, 101 West Flagler Street, Miami (305) 375-2665

Imagine that your work day involves climbing into a big, flower and zebra-striped van with an art gallery inside. You and your co-workers drive the streets of Miami-Dade County, going to schools, fairgrounds, shopping centers, and prisons. People in traffic point at you and smile. You park, set up a little sign outside, and invite people into the van’s fabric-lined, air-conditioned interior. You talk about the art with families who have just come off a Ferris wheel, prisoners, curious grocery shoppers, and school kids sitting cross-legged on the floor. You explain exhibitions in which Velcro and portability are essential ingredients.

On Thursday, starting at 7:00pm, library art pioneers Margarita Cano and Barbara Young will be at the Main Library to share stories and experiences like these about the Artmobile, including its origin and its impact on Miami in its early stages as an arts and cultural center. There will also be a closing reception for the exhibition, which includes original artwork and archival materials from the Library's permanent collection documenting the Artmobile, the Miami Domino Tumble, and other projects that brought art out into the public sphere.
