Okay, here I go jumping in again, taking advantage of John's observation
that "online publications still do not hold the weight of a print
journal in most academic circles, peer-reviewed or not."

I have heard this contention over and over again in art-historical and
library circles since the early 1990s. In the early 1990s it was
certainly true in all fields of study. In the mid-2000s, it cannot
possibly be more than partially true in many fields of study. In the
sciences, for example: if it was still true for those fields, how could
I possibly have physics professors coming to me repeatedly asking me to
cancel more and more print subscriptions in favor of buying
all-electronic ones? And please look around your libraries (or
departments), and count how many people at this very moment are looking
at computers compared to how many people are flipping through magazines.

The law of uneven development is clearly operating in scholarly
publishing, with trends in art publishing lagging behind those in
scientific publishing. I find it hard to accept that this situation
benefits the arts community at large (though I can see how it works to
preserve the power of its more entrenched members).

The question before us, in my view, is what we - librarians and art
scholars alike -- can do to transform the academic attitudes that are (I
agree here with John) slowing the acceptance of electronic publishing in
the arts and librarianship. I hate to see us defeated before we even
start, by hesitating to make changes on the grounds we are not ready for
change.

Ann,

Is there any reason why the reviews couldn't be published both online
and in Art Documentation? Six times online for expediency and WWW access
and in the print journal for archiving, particularly within libraries.
Perhaps this could be tried during a two-year grace period?

I know that this could be seen as duplication or not cost effective but
I think there are some serious issues regarding archiving as well as the
fact that online publications still do not hold the weight of a print
journal in most academic circles, peer-reviewed or not. Some of us who
are ARLIS members are not situated within a library but within academic
departments.
