Temporary Processing Archivist

 

About MOCA

Founded in 1979, The Museum of Contemporary Art is the only museum in Los Angeles devoted exclusively to contemporary art. It is committed to the collection, presentation, and interpretation of work produced since 1940 in all media, and to preserving that work for future generations. Overview

This temporary position is part of a two-year phase of an archiving project. The expected timeframe for this phase is October 2006–September 2008. The processing archivist will arrange, describe and re-house MOCA’s exhibition documentation, which consists of approximately 200 cubic feet of various materials dating from MOCA’s inception to the present. The files include project descriptions, checklists, correspondence with artists and lenders, installation designs and printed ephemera. The candidate will write and encode detail finding aids in the EAD2002 format and prepare them for publishing on the museum’s web site.

 

Requirements

­         ALA accredited MLIS degree with an archival emphasis, masters in art history, or a combination of training and experience.

­         Previous experience processing, arranging and describing archives.

­         Knowledge of DACS, EAD2002 and XML.

­         Very strong written skills.

­         Knowledge of contemporary art preferred.

­         Must be able to lift heavy boxes.

 

Assignments

­         Process, arrange and describe MOCA’s exhibition archives according to DACS and AACR2.

­         Write detailed finding aids.

­         Encode finding aids in EAD2002 using XML.

­         Edit finding aids for consistency and style.

­         Other duties as assigned.
