A revised version [Version 2] of Information Competencies for Students in
Design Disciplines is now ready for your comments and use. Many thanks to
those who provided comments on the prior version, which was linked to from
the ARLIS/NA members-only page, and which was discussed at the AASL
conference in Salt Lake and the ARLIS/NA conference in Banff.

In response to comments, we have created three documents: competencies at
the basic level, the intermediate level, and the advanced level. Each
level has general skills that are applicable to students in all design
disciplines, followed by skills for the individual disciplines. There is
also an introduction which explains the process and the perceived need for
the development of information competencies for design students.

Disciplines covered, and the person who drafted competencies for each,
are:

Jeanne Brown, University of Nevada Las Vegas, chair, architecture
competencies; Jane Carlin, University of Cincinnati, planning
competencies, fashion competencies; Edith Crowe, San Jose State
University, art history competencies; Maya Gervits, New Jersey Institute
of Technology, architecture history competencies; Susan Lewis, Boston
Architectural Center, interior design competencies; Alan Michelson,
University of Washington, landscape architecture competencies; Barbara
Opar, Syracuse University, architectural technology competencies; and
Jennifer Parker, University of Colorado, studio arts competencies.

These are documents in process. More disciplines can be added.
Competencies can be revised, deleted, added. Levels can be changed.

The group would be very interested in -- and grateful for -- your input.
If you use the competencies, please let us know. Were they useful? How did
the students and faculty respond? What assignments or exercises did you
use? Was there an evaluation component? Please send any input to
[log in to unmask], and I will share it with the group.

A special thanks to those who undertook to draft the competencies. It has
required ongoing attention and dedication!

 Jeanne
