Major
Duties:
The position is located
within the Library’s Department of Image Collections of the National
Gallery of Art. The position is chiefly responsible for maintaining and
developing an extensive study collection of slides, photographs and digital
images of pre-20th century art of Northern Europe (principally
Netherlandish, Dutch, Flemish, Belgian, and German art); performing original
descriptive and subject online cataloging of images using the Library’s
Mercury database, with all information being coded into machine-readable
formats; contributing to the development of two online authority files –
a subject and institutional/personal name file and an artist file; and
assisting in the implementation of the Gallery’s image classification and
subject heading system for art historical images. The incumbent also
researches and upgrades the Department’s Northern European collections
and identifies photographic images needed to enhance the collection and
recommends their purchase, assists Gallery staff, fellows, and visiting
scholars by providing reference assistance for locating images.
Qualifications:
Candidates must meet the
Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for GS-1016-9. This requires at
least one year of specialized experience equivalent in responsibility to the
GS-7 level in the Federal service OR two years of graduate education or a
Master’s degree in art history. Specialized
experience is image resources management experience involving a major
international art collection which has provided a thorough knowledge of the
principles and standards for image description and access in an automated
environment. An equivalent combination of education and experience is fully
qualifying and meets the minimum qualification requirements.
Federal status candidates
also must meet the time-in-grade requirements of having been at the GS-7 level
for at least one year.
