The Image Librarian is responsible for the overall administration of the Image Services department including budget development, collection development, image production, cataloging, support of classroom instruction, proactive development of reference and user assistance services, training and database management. The department is comprised of two full-time staff and 2 part-time staff as well as volunteers and work-study students. The Image Librarian is responsible for providing expertise in managing image data in compliance with standards proposed by VRA, MARC and Dublin Core and works closely with a variety of library departments (Systems, Technical Services and Public Services) and other units within the museum in developing image policies and practices. The position is a member of the library senior staff and serves as the liaison to the Visual Resources Association. The Image Librarian will be involved with the final stages of the digitization of the 475,000 slides in the slide collection and in the selection of a new image database. The Ingalls Library is a nationally recognized art reference library (including image library and museum archives). Founded in 1916, the library contains approximately 400,000 titles, including journals, 80,000 auction catalogues, and 21,000 clipping files. The image library contains approximately 229,500 digital images with metadata, and 6,000,000 photographs of works of art and architecture, including individual photographs and microfiche. The Image Services department is used by museum staff, students and faculty in the CWRU/CMA Joint Program in Art History and the general public. Requirements: Master's degree from an ALA accredited program (M.L.S.) or art history (M.A.); substantial background in art history or equivalent; minimum of five years related experience and/or training, preferably in a research library, or equivalent combination of education and experience; working knowledge of at least one European language, preferably Italian, French, German or Dutch; familiarity with image cataloging principles and tools including MARC21, VRA, Dublin Core, EAD or others; knowledge of digital asset management systems such as CONTENTdm; knowledge of licensing practice and copyright issues involving visual images and image collections; demonstrated skills in management, supervision and training; familiarity with standard reference tools in the field of art history; commitment to public service; flexibility and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment. Desirable Qualifications: Experience with image presentation tools such as LUNA/Insight, ARTstor, MDID; demonstrated project management skills. Position available: Immediately.
